Can anyone please help me identify this yellow flower which I inherited from my grandmother who called it simply "button flower". It seems to grow and flourish one season and then sometimes disappear completely the next. Just when I've lost hope of it returning it pops up in spring again to my delight. It puts forth runners from its base on which it spreads along the ground. Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

There is a Ranunculus asiaticus - Persian Buttercup that looks a lot like that, but I don't know if it is a creeper.

My coworker gave some to me but they were single. She called them "Creeping Buttercup" and they about took over my back flowerbed  They are pretty though with beautiful foliage. I think they would be awesome if you had a pond or bog area :p

    Many thanks

My thanks to all of you who responded to my request for help identifying this plant. Now that I know what it is I hope to be able to care for it better and make sure it is preserved.
