I just happened to notice some ripened figs on my trees this evening! They are just a little early so I hadn't been watching that closely. They're gonna be really good with breakfast tomorrow morning! some of the first figs. ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) early ripe figs. That is a great sight to see. You are going to have a good success there with that fig tree. What sorts of things do you do with the figs?
Great looking Figs. We don't get to eat any of our Figs anymore. The birds and squirrels are out there feasting before I even know they are ripe. I thought I might get some this year, some started ripening in mid-July about a month earlier than normal. But the critters must have been watching them too cause they got to them again before I did.
Early Ripe Figs in my Yard Lovely! What kind of fig is that? I have Celeste and a mystery fig tree that supposedly originated in Greece or Italy (depends on which relative tells the story) and got passed along for several generations via suckers. Your fig tree and its figs look a lot like the mystery one I have! Slicing them thin and drying them like chips is DIVINE! You could also candy them. It takes a few days but is absolutely irresistible! I've also seen them served with a bit of marsipan and candied fruit bits inside a split fig. There's a great Rachel Ray dinner dish with pasta that is also yummy. The best way though, is fresh off the tree as you stand there admiring them!!!!!! Beautiful photo, Daisy!
Lulu, this fig came originally from a cutting that was given to my mother by our neighbor. It came from a tree that was descended by cuttings from cuttings that were brought from Italy by the neighbors' father when he emigrated. So... your mystery fig may indeed be from Italy originally. I have no idea what "kind" it is... I saw some at Meadows Farms that looked like it and it said it was a Mission Fig. So... after I fight the birds and bees for them (Toni!!!) I freeze some to feed the squirrels in the winter. I make some preserves. I put them in salads. I share a LOT -- people seem to love fresh figs. I'm looking for more ideas. But I agree with Lulu.. the BEST way to enjoy them is while I'm standing in the sun and they are warm and juicy right off the trees. Even better if someone is with me! YUMMM!!
OMG, fresh, soft, honey sweet figs are my most favoourite and most devine fruits. So jealous. You enjoy them won't you!
Could you believe I have never tasted a fig???I have never even heard of them around our area except in fig cookies and I have never tried one of those...
I've never tried one either! I vaguely remember eating one when I was a very small child and saying yuck, but I might like them now. Especially fresh from the tree!
I have offered fresh figs to people of all ages.I feel compelled to share the bliss! They look at the plain, brown, and yes to some people, ugly (I don't think it is) fruit and they either trust and take the leap, or they refuse to try the fig. Once someone tries it, they at least find it pleasant and most people are surprised at how delicious the taste is. I adore figs and prefer them to many other fruits, but I remember having those same doubts when I was first introduced to them as an adult. Perhaps the fig's modest appearance is Mother Nature's way of protecting it from being devoured too fast! Well, I'm headed out for an appointment, but I will be sure to pause by the fig trees and grab a quick snack!
I wanted you to see how big my fig trees are -- I'm in the picture to help show the size and I'm a muddy mess so bear that in mind. Both trees are LOADED. I can even open the window in the living room or my bedroom and pick a few.... I wish I could send you some figs Netty and Sherry.... They are so darn fragile though... fig trees ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden )
Neato-Bandito I've never tried them either. I think we should all load up and head to MaryAnn's! I love fig newtons, I should like these too it sounds like
I loooovvvve figs Have a reciepe where you stick a pistachio inside and wrap with very thin sliced ham, or just eat them off the tree :-D. Wish they grew better here
