Earth Day is on April 22, 2008. I my self will be Cleaning up my school and the pond behind it. I will also be cleaning up my neighborhood. I will also be wearing blue to say no to new coal-fired power plants. What are yall going to be doing to make your earth better?
I was planning to take the kids along our road to pick up all the the trash in the ditches. It just disgusts me what people throw out their car windows!!!
Our village will have volunteers cleaning up the river and we're having bottle banks installed in the hotel car park for public use. As for me I've converted to all energy saving light bulbs, will continue being an organic gardener and buying recycled goods where possible. We already switch off all electrical appliances at night so that they're not sitting on stand-by.
Its kind of hard up here in the Artic. the roadsides don't have any trash in them,(i walk just about everyday so i see) We don't need lights now until after 11pm or 23:00 and by that time were ready for bed anyways. All our lights are energy efficient anyways because of the winter when we have to use them. The earth itself is too cold and mostly still frozen to plant. We switch from cars to bicycles as soon as the weather permits. but i do have 2 baby pines that I would love to move to a safer spot for them... but that will have to be later in the months. So i will celebrate earth day then.
I will do pretty much what I do everyday of the year. Every two weeks the recycle company empties the 95 gallon barrel they supply to each home, mine is always filled to the brim with bottles, aluminum and steel cans, junk mail, scrap paper, magazines, mail order catalogs, paperboard, cardboard, plastic containers. Every week the trash company empties the 95 gallon container provided by the city but since we recycle so much our regular trash can usually only needs to be emptied once a month. Continue working on turning my entire front and back yards into gardens so we don't have to use a lawn mower any longer. I harvest rainwater and will be using more barrels for that later this spring. I also collect the water that would normally run down the drain while heating up for a shower or to do the dishes to water plants. I use organic/biodegradable dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent. Our bathsoap is homemade using a Goats Milk base, our shampoos are organic. Lights stay off in the house unless they are actually needed. We are converting over to the energy efficient bulbs, the only problem being that they are not allowed in the trash when they burn out, there is only one place that is collecting them to recycle and that is the IKEA store way north of here. I am the owner of a rEcycle e-list whose purpose is to keep stuff out of the landfill. So for me, next Tuesday will be life as usual.
Wow toni! I really like what you're doing. I think I may try some of it myself. I have always wanted to collect rain water but where I live I can't have a barrel out. Since I'm moving soon I'll be able to do that tho. I'm really looking forward to that! Thanks for sharing what you're doing. Me? I'll just be working in the yard, digging up plants that I want to move with me and trying not to leave holes. hehehe!
I will also be going out to clean up the Elementary and middle school down the road from my house. then i might go and clean up some where else not sure. what ever i feel like doing.
