Isn't a cactus a funny thing? I don't have any experience with a prickly pear but I know with my Christmas cactus they seem to sit dormant, not doing anything and then WOW!! here they come!!! Here is my
Easter cactus doing her thing right now in my office

WOW! That's beautiful stratsmom. Does that Christmas cactus need lots of light or minimal. After seeing that, I'm considering trying my thumb at it.

I don't know what it likes to tell you the truth :-o A guy that works here brought me a start and my friend Tamie a start when his mom passed away several years ago. I have left it in that south window ever since and this is the best it has ever done! It gets a lot of bright, indirect light and I only water it when it is really dry. About a month ago I bought some "Schultz Cactus Plus liquid plant food" and started watering with it. The results make me a believer! I learned from others here on the stew that they like to be kind of root bound and like very porous soil :p Oh yeah, and cat hair. I think it likes all the cat hair in this office :D
