Eastern Black Swallowtail Caterpillar ( photo / image / picture from kathyd's Garden ) Today is a rainy and dreary day in the Northeast. A good day to make big batches of chicken broth to use and freeze. I still have a good amount of parsley left in my garden, so I went out under my umbrella to pick a few bunches. I came upon this Eastern Swallowtail caterpillar, about an inch long, munching on the parsley. He really surprised me. It hasn't been the best year for butterflies with all the rain, and it is late in the season. He is a lucky fellow, or gal...he might have ended up in the soup. The picture is a bit blurry...I think the cause was the rainy, gray atmosphere and trying to balance umbrella and camera at once.
I hope so too...I need to read up on butterflies. Do they overwinter as eggs, or do some overwinter in their chrysalis?
