I love eggplant but have not been successful at growing them. So I spend my money at the local farmers market and get gorgeous ones!

Gardenmama, I have only limited success with them also and usually grow them in tubs in the greenhouse, however this year I have BIG plans and am going to build some mini polytunnels on the allotment to grow them under. I am going to dig masses of my lovely compost in to give them a good start and hopefully Mark will rig up a drip watering system for me so I can keep them moist even when we are away from the plot.....mind you, with the amount of water sitting on the allotment at the moment, I am thinking of growing rice!!

It sounds like you've got good plans for those aubergines. The lady across from us grew them outside last year and they did just fine.
I'm hoping that you will be successful.

    Piccies, please. ;)

Still waiting for the darn things to germinate! Toms are up, but the chillies and aubs are just taking their time.

I found that to grow eggplant in an area with shortseason growing (last frost date in spring June 1, first in fall September 15), container growing works well. They seem to thrive on the heat generated by a black container. I use the larger ones that trees and shrubs are sold in for best results.

    Last two years I've grown
    Diamond
    Ping Tung Long
    Black Beauty

This year I am expanding the repertoire to include
    Applegreen
    Thai Long Green

and IF I can find a plant in a local greenhouse of either
    Casper
    or
    Cloud Nine Hybrid

I will be most pleased to try the whites as well.

And yes, for those who are concerned because their tomato seedlings have germinated yet their peppers and eggplant that were sown at the same time haven't? Well don't be alarmed. They generally take longer to germinate and they do like a warmer temperature to germinate at. See if you can't supply some bottom heat to your trays with a heating pad or by placing on top of an older fridge that gives off a bit of heat(newer energy efficient don't).

I sowed tomato, eggplant, sweet peppers and a few herbs a week today. The tomatoes germinated Sunday. The lemon balm is up today. No sign of the eggplant or peppers yet. They will come.
