As some of you know, we have been rebuilding our quail brood after foxy got in during the winter and killed and released my flock to the wilds of Essex. We now have 16 birds with another 7 eggs in the incubator and at last the girls have started laying. ( photo / image / picture from EJ's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from EJ's Garden ) I shall get some pics of the birds over the weekend as we have a good mix of colours and sizes now. The fox is back, but after our previous tragedy, he has been unable to break in, although he has tried very, very hard, so fingers crossed he will loose interest and stop bothering us.
I realy hope that fox gets tired of trying to get your new batch of quail EJ. They can certainly be persistant can't they?
16 birds,..you recovered well EJ,..plus eggs in the incubator!,..watch that fox,..clever and cunning creatures!,..though i was on good terms with a cub for some time,..and while i had lots of fowl?,..but no incidents at all where the fowl was concerned.
Wow! good for you to start again. It's sooooo devastating to have your brood killed. So sad for you, (from my own experience I completely understand, I had a racoon kill all of my pullets last year, 28 of them :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( Have you heard of a predator stone? I saw one the last time I went to get grain, it looked like a really great idea if it works. It is a porous(sp?) stone that is embedded with a repellent smell and totally safe for your coop. I am assuming a predator scent like hunters would use to lure or cover a smell for a trap.
Good to see that your girls have been producing eggs again. It sounds like Mark has done good work with the foxproofing too. Let's hope that it holds. When the chicks emerge, do send dome pics.
