Well I know you all said you wanted to see some piccies of our time away so I hope you're prepared to be a tad bored!! Firstly we travelled down south to Newcastle and this is the weather we encountered on our journey. The roads were very dangerous in places with black ice underneath the snow so we took the trip slowly to make sure we didn't skid. Here are a couple of piccies I took from the car window. After we arrived at our hotel we unpacked and went for a meal. Snow had started to fall again so we decided to stay in the hotel room and play cards. The next day (Friday) the weather was still atrocious and the planned visit to the Wetlands Wildfowl trust was out of the question. We spent the day trailing around the Metro Centre shops wishing we could be outdoors. We did manage to get some Chrissy shopping done though so the day wasn't a complete waste. Saturday (my birthday) and the weather was much better. The gritters and snowploughs had been out and it had rained so driving was easier. We headed for Thirsk in Yorkshire for my birthday treat which was to visit the James Herriot Museum. I used to be a veterinary nurse and actually knew James Alfred Wight (James Herriots real name.) I found the museum fascinating as it was situated in the actual home and workplace of this famous vet. Here are a few piccies of the inside for you. Model of the notorious Mrs Pumphrey and her Peke Tricky Woo. The reception area: Dispensary: Consulting room: Operating table: Some instruments from days gone by: The car that was used in the TV series 'All Creatures Great and Small.' This was JA Wights own car: I loved every second I was walking around the museum. The best birthday yet!!
Oh what a birthday pesent and the snow is beautiful too.I would love to go through the museum myself. Thanks for letting us go along with you.
Thanks for the trip and tour. Sounds like you had a wonderful time, after the weather cleared a bit. I hate that black ice. I ended up in a ditch after hitting a patch, and it wasn't fun!!Two farmers came by and pulled us out.
Oh, you lucky so-and-so. What a great birthday surprize that was. I enjoyed this books and the telly series very much. I really liked the characters that he described. Priceless....just like your piccies. Thank you so much for taking the pics and taking the time to post them here.
What a wonderful idea for your birthday, Ian really thought of you. Our PBS station has shown the All Creatures Great and Small BBC program several times over the years, not in a long time tho. I wouldn't mind seeing them again.
I like James Herriot's books a lot, and have read them now and again over the years. I would have loved to walk through that museum for real, but thank you so much for bringing me along!
Thank you for for the tour. What great pictures. I loved the books, I did not realize there was a television series, will have to look that up. Happy Belated Birthday!
Oh Eileen, you lucky girl, I would have loved a surprise like that, good old Ian :-D I used to love the TV programme and your photos really brought back memories. The snow looks lovely, even if a bit treacherous Thanks for the tour
The snow has gone for the time being Frank but has been replaced by a very heavy frost so the grass is still white and the pond hasn't thawed out in over two weeks.
Thanks for posting those!! I'm not usually the sort of person to get startstruck, but James H. had me wanting to be a vet from waaaay back. Didn't have the brains, though, lol!
I just want to add my thanks for pics. I too loved James H.' books and have read them all. I saw some episodes of the TV series and enjoyed those too.....but the books were enchanting.
sorry the weather wasn't better for you...Maybe you will have to celebrate your Birthday every 6 months to catch some nicer weather...LOL thanks for the great pictures...Sherry
