With the hurricane season coming, and with the wildfires in the north and southwest, my husband and I were talking about getting out in a hurry if needed. Now, don't worry, the only emergency on Red Gate Farm is if I run out of butter, but just in case . . . .
We have a metal box with our important papers in it; a large carrier for our hens (if they keep gaining weight we'll need two carriers) handy in the barn; a duffle with a change of underwear, allergy medicine, an address book with names and phone numbers of folks who need to know we are okay, and flashlights. The cat carrier is ready to go, along with an extra bag of her food. We have two cell phones, one always in the car. The house cell phone will go with me in the truck if we have to skedaddle. None of our neighbors are incapable of evacuating, but we are on a call list for others who need help (want to take a ride in a pick-up with chickens and an unhappy cat?).
I was wondering if anyone else has an emergency plan? And I hope to God we and you never have to use it!

That's a really good plan, Marlin. Always a good idead to be prepared for an emergency.
We have emergency supplies (water, food, candles, radio, batteries...) but you remind me of other items that would be needed.
    Never know what could happen.

Not a concrete plan, just portions of one. We have water, food, etc but no evacuation plan. I think we need to look into a car charger for our phones.
We have two of them, also. Chance would be our main worry.

Another item to keep in your 'Hurricane-kit' is 2-3 hundred dollars in small bills, twenties and smaller..
Why, you might ask.. Answer: one of the first casualties of storms is usually the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, and when that goes then businesses can not process credit cards, etc. so if you are in the area affected you will need cash to purchase items you need..

By the time a hurricane reaches this far north it has been downgraded to either a Tropical Storm, Tropical Depression or just a heavy rain event.
Our main concern are tornadoes, when we have typical tornado creating weather and there isn't a whole lot of preplanning you can do for that. Flashlights and batteries, but if your house is damaged you can't live there so you go to a motel/family/friends. Not much chance of advanced warning to have an evacuation plan. One of us would have to grab Caprina (youngest daughter's Ferret) and we would each pick a closet to crawl into.

In any of you all have to evacuate and come this far north, our house is about only 1000 square feet, all three bedrooms are used and there is only one bathroom.....but we do have a couple of recliners and two twin size air mattresses. And if nothing else, I can get motel rooms reserved with free breakfast, then other meals can be made and eaten here.

Well yes I do have a plan ......RUN and very fastly, probably to Tonis if I can make it somehow,

no seriously though, there are community plans for evacuation etc. and a generater which we use for camping and the caravan is always ready to go at a minutes notice. We have to realise that just because we live on a hill doesnt mean we are safe from everything. We have important papers and photos packed safely, which really would all be left if we had to go immediately. Our little baby boy[toy poodle] would be in the front seat of course.

If I see a snake here I can evacuate REAL quick in fact in world record breaking time!

All other's advice does make sense though, good tip about the small change....not many of us carry real money anymore.

Well I'm happy to say that here in Scotland I don't have to be prepared for hurricanes.
We do have a change of clothes that we keep in the car (it can get pretty wet here  ) an emergency tool kit for the car, a first aid box for any small accidents we may have, some secateurs, a trowel etc (you know there's always a plant you want a cutting from on route :p ) and £50 in readies as we can sometimes forget to take our debit card out with us.
