I just found this video on the news:

    http://www.abcnyheter.no/video/2013/03/ ... bject_map={%2210151281509330904%22%3A499333980127917}&action_type_map={%2210151281509330904%22%3A%22og.recommends%22}&action_ref_map=[]

I don't know if any of you can access the link but it shows a severe snowstorm in Scotland and northern England plus flooding in the southwest of England. :( Cars are actually buried in huge snowdrifts, and thousands are without electricity.

Thank you for your concern Droopy. I am very lucky to live in a part of the country which is rarely touched as badly by the extremes of weather and so although we had some snow yesterday it all went before tea-time. I have friends in North Wales where it hasn't stopped snowing since Thursday

I'm OK too Droopy. We have gale force winds and snow at the moment. Thankfully our cottage is on high ground so even if our river bursts its banks we'll be fine. Fingers crossed we begin to get some real spring weather soon so that everything cn get back to normal.

Wow, droopy, I had heard things were really bad there, but a grapple on an excavator looks a little inefficient to move the snow. I wish I could send my DH's wheel loader over to help. It sure would help move a lot of snow. We had a lot of snow a few years ago that needed plowed off the roads daily and was getting piled higher and higher with every snowfall and he went to help scoop it up and move it out of parking lots and from street corners, the piles were over 8' tall . that was two years ago when it snow everyday from Oct to March and then rained every day from March until Sept/Oct, then quit precipitating for the next 9 months  . We bought a new snowplow and never used it once that winter. This winter we still didn't have nearly as much snow as some of the other areas in our country, but the temperatures are just a miserable here as everywhere else.

Kiasmum and eileen, I'm so glad to see you. :stew2: Let's hope the storm stops and spring arrives to melt all that snow. That kind of weather is severe no matter where it hits. :(

The big problem here is the speed with which the snow might melt. The last lot went almost over night and that caused huge flooding problems round here as the drainage system could not take the huge volume of suddenly released water.
We have had a lot of snow here, but not caused any major problems, but then we do not need to go out.
Carolyn, this kind of weather is generally so unusual in most of Britain that there is no need for expensive Snow busting machinery. 9 years out of 10 they would just sit in Depots and gather dust. In the areas where snow does fall then they do have proper machinery. The News tends to focus on the bad bits, like where there are power cuts. Bad news sells papers!

Glad to hear people are holding up O.K. The weather is unusual. Sorry to hear about your woodshed Palustris, I hope it will be easy to repair.

It just occurred to me while reading this thread--isn't it wonderful that people all over the world are worried about folks in the UK?
And in past posts, not just for those in the UK, but anyone who is having severe weather, high winds, cold, anything that could be dangerous or inconvenient.
In addition to being smart, funny, helpful, and inventive, Stewies are also some of the kindest people on the planet!

Good to see you Palustris. :)

ck, we've got a snowblower sitting in the garage. We haven't needed it at all this year. Three winters ago we wouldn't have managed without it.

Yes mg, the Stewbies are a very friendly bunch. :D Some have net-known each other for years. It's like having RL friends, only difference is we've never met. :D

Thanks Jerry. Had a look at the shed today and saw that the roof on the one next to it has also gone down. Total rebuild I think as the roof timbers have damaged the walls too. Also realised late on that it had left the power socket and lights in there exposed to the elements. I think that the roof has ripped the cables out of the wall from the Fuse box so they power is off in there. Will have to have a real good look tomorrow. Could do with out the extra work at present.

The wood pile is hidden by the corrugated iron roof.
