They are everywhere. When you live on the edge of a rainforest and have a woodland garden they are everywhere. Too wet for snails. Anyone want some six inchers for pets? ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) I must be getting even lazier than ever because I some how feel they just must belong. I am learning what plants are truly slug resistent ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden )
It looks like a cousin to a banana slug. I suppose you are use to it and other rain-forest creatures. Around here it would creep people out. Jerry
My stars, a pest that this part of Texas doesn't have.I'll pass on a 6" "pet" slug. I'm not squeamish, but YUCK!! Those lilies are gorgeous. Are they Asiatics?
The yellow flowers are self-sewn fragrant daylilies. Unfortunately banana slugs are endangered because of these guys. Silly trivia: native Americans in this area have some funny stories about the friendly, curious banana slug. Banana Slug ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden )
Jewell, I have one fragrant daylily, for lack of a name I call it 'Lemon Yellow' that is not it's real name but I needed one for my log book. Do you know if your daylily has a name? Also I mentioned to my wife that you are learning which plants are slug resistant, do you know anymore resistant plants? Thanks, Jerry
Oh my Hedgehogs would just love to have those slugs!,..they have eaten all the large slugs up,..nothing left but wee pencil types,..i feel sorry for them.
Too bad hedgehogs are not native here. Had pet ducks for years. Kakhi Campbell's :-D Resistent and many are self-sowing in my area are: columbines daylilies (except they seem to like the dead blooms) echinachae heathers/heath chinese ground orchid sweet woodruff All bleeding hearts lamb's ears foxglove roses iris lavenders lupine most perennial herbs most alliums
Oh I know that first one...we have those here and we also have some huge orange ones. Luckily, I have a couple nice little slug traps to trap them in...There are a couple of blackbirds and thrushes that help out as well. Between these monsters and the snails with shells--it is a constant battle. These big slugs and the snails are what I must deal with in the flower garden primarily, but in the veggie garden it is smaller slugs that live in the ground and creep up and out at night to dine...and another type stays underground and will empty out potatoes from their thin skins. Yes, these little beasts are a big part of my pest problem where I garden.
Disgusting! I abhor slugs. A good slug is a dead slug here. Yucko, I am so glad we don't have any that size. The ones we do have I wage a battle on. Can you even buy slug bait since the banana slugs are endangered? and who checks to see if people are not targeting the endangered ones, when they are doing slug patrol?
I tend to take photographs of the slugs and snails around here. As soon as I have a picture of them though I introduce them to my size 8 shoes and send them off to slime heaven. The ones that come out at night I leave for the hedgehogs.
Carolyn, I used to bait for the slugs and that kept them thinned to a reasonable number. My one dobie eats everything (it was daily lily flowers this morning) so I haven't baited since we've had her. Sorry Sjoerd that slugs are a problem for you too. How discouraging to find potatoes eaten out. Darn dog drank the beer in the traps I set out and broke one. Still love her though...she has one or two redeeming qualities. Eileen, I'm a big baby and can't bring myself to squish them. I sometimes do the slug toss
