    I have a question, I am getting to use Celsius temperatures for the first time, here at the Stew, so I made a spread sheet to convert from either to the other. Since a degree of Celsius is a much greater temperature change than a degree of Fahrenheit, my question is, is it appropriate to use decimal places when listing Celsius readings? For instance, both 11 and 12 degrees F fall into -11 degrees C. So to be accurate, one must use decimal places to distinguish the difference. Or am I just nit picking too much. In my work, accurate temperatures were very important, so I'm maybe a little more aware of them than need be. There was a time some 20 or 30 years ago the powers that be, where going to switch from our (American ) system to the metric system so that all the world could talk the same talk, and that sounded good, we all needed to learn how to use metrics. However, as you can see, nothing much ever came of it, and I never learned how to use Celsius, I welcome this opportunity to use it some. So what is it, decimals or no decimals??

    I never use decimals. Five degs are five, and not much warmer or colder than 4,8 or 5,3 for that matter. I'm very impressed that you have taken the trouble to make a spread sheet. I just use the converter found in this link:

    http://www.stabb.com/tools/convert.html

    I've never used Fahrenheit either before I joined the Stew, which goes to show that we're never too old to learn. :D

    Yes no decimals are used in 99.9% of cases I've seen (yes I realise I used decimals in my percentage :D). Fahrenheit was alien to me before GardenStew also but not so much anymore.

    I use this site for conversions of all types, when you do a google search for-- Conversions -- it is the first site listed and easy to use.

    I had never used Celsius or any of the metric measures before joining the Stew either.
    There was talk about changing our measuring systems to metric when my oldest was in elementary school about 30 years ago but I think they realized how much trouble it was going to be to convert all aspects of our lives and how they would have to fight the older folks who didn't see any reason for change and gave up. :-D

    I know we're talking celsius and fehrenheit here but my little one just last nite was asking about how much a gram of weight is. I'm not sure how to turn grams into ?ounces or ?pounds? Anyone know of these measurements? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

    Our outdoor thermometer has readings for both but when I started on Gardenstew, I went and got a chart off of the internet. I still have to refer to the chart when I want to know what they celsius temps are somewhere. Our medications are in grams and milligrams and something called micrograms. dooley

    before i went to america as a child i used metric, then in america i used american standard or fahrenheit and pound system. Now i have to use metric again, an in my opinion its so much easier because the metric system is all based on the 10's unit. just add a zero for the smaller you get. liter is 1, deciliter is 10, ect ect.. same with the grams,,its all in 10's, 10,20,30 ect ect. but thats just my opinion, an the converter are always a big help for an instand conversion.

    i remember when in america they were trying to convert everything over,, an if i'm not mistaken,, i think they still have the grams in parenthesis on the bags an cans of food items. maybe i'm wrong, (its happened a few times,,,lol,,) :D

    On another forum I frequent we list our temps as f or c and when we're conversing with someone who uses c all the time she usually converts for us and says it's xx degrees c, thats xx degrees for you guys.

    I wouldn't bother with the decimals in the temperature conversion. If I tell you its 10*f here or 10.5* f here you're still going to know its freaking cold!

    0'c = 32' F
    100'c = 212' F
    -40'c = -40' F

    C->F
    0'C * 9/5 + 32 = 32F
    100'C * 9/5 + 32 = 212F

    F->C
    ( 32F - 32) * 5/9 = 0'C
    ( 212F - 32 ) *5/9 = 100'C

    or instead of 5/9 just use 1/2 and instead of 9/5 just use 2 to get an estimate.

    I still find it all confusing and its me that converts what it is in Celsius, for Wrennie.....would make it easier if we just went back to what it used to be!!

    Well, since misters Anders Celsius and Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit were nearly contemporary it's just chance that made most English-speaking countries choose Fahrenheit and everybody else Celsius for measuring temperatures. So what is "used to be" then?

    What i meant was, when i was in grade school, we started out with the Imperial system and then moved into the Metric system, so instead of feet and pounds, its now metres and kilograms here in Canada.

    It's never fun to get used to something new. We've tried to change our counting from "one-and-twenty" to "twentyone" but I still can't do it... And this was formally changed when my mother was young. :D
