I placed 3 separate orders for some bulbs... an Ice Cream Tulip for my old ice cream maker planter (gonna have to check to see when I should get it planted). Calla Lilies... those were put in a couple weeks ago. And my Oriental Lilies just arrived! They'll be going in the ground this weekend. Anybody else doing some Fall planting?
How cold does winter usually get down there? You might want to store the Tulips in the bottom drawer of the fridge for about 6 weeks to give them the chill factor they need for blooming. I absolutely love Fall planting. The heat hits too quickly in Spring to wait until then and the best summer perennials are only available from August through October...by mail order that is. The local garden centers don't even bother with perennials this time of year, they are too set in a routine of Pansies, Mums, and assorted winter hardy bloomers. I have most of the plants that came in my Fall orders in the ground and am waiting on some bulbs from Breck's. I am loading up on Summer Snowflakes and Snowdrops...they should be here next week or so. And I plan on getting more Asiatic Lilies planted this fall.
Toni... the Tulip has been in the fridge for about a month now... so I should be getting close to my planting time. We can get some freezing temps during November and early December... but not hard freezes... we usually don't get those until late-December and January. I know what you mean about the nurseries' selections... mums, mums and more mums!
