Our son, Dan, moved over by us. He has a cable internet connection that he had moved over too. So last night he came and hooked my computer to the cable internet. Boy, things move around fast now. The other day I had to update my firewall. It took me most of an hour. Then, I lost it somewhere. So, tonight Dan updated it again. It took about two minutes and he was done. He didn't lose it either. He went back and updated all the things like the virus progran and the Spybot program and a windows update. He was done before I had supper on the table and I had it almost finished when he started. I think I will like this. Dooley
I'm so envious I have dial-up and it takes soooo long to download anything!! I know you must be so glad to be able to do everything so fast!!
I have dial-up broadband and everything is quite quick but could definately be quicker!! What a pity your son doesn't live anywhere near me Dooley - I could do with someone like him around as I'm always losing stuff.
For me broadband is a necessity because I have to upload stuff, backup information and manage this website plus others. It is as essential as electricity now. I also use the Internet for calling globally and you need broadband to perform this. I use Skype to call abroad from my laptop. I spent many years in the world of dialup and I can't go back now that I have tasted broadband. I'm pretty sure GardenStew loads quickly using dialup. Or am I wrong?
I was reading some of the dial-up vs. broadband issues, and came across Skype... I've heard of this before, can anyone tell me whether the other person needs a computer if I were to call via Skype? My mother lives in England, but has no access to a computer, would Skype work here? Also, what does one need to activitate Skype? Many thanks, Loretta
Hi Loretta. The other person does not need another computer, you can use Skype to call straight to their landline. You need to check out SkypeOut http://www.skype.com/products/ What you do is purchase some SkypeOut credit online and then use Skype to call a landline number as normal. It is really really cheap compared to conventional methods and the quality is great the majority of the time. All the help you need will be on their website so I definitely recommend it!
I've got cable modem here now too....and I don't think I could go back to dial up. I stayed at my moms a couple weeks ago & she still has dial up.....It was a sorry reminder of how slow things used to be. I'm so spoiled!
I don't think I could live without my DSL connection. But I do work on my computer full time so it's a necessity too. Not to mention how very impatient I am lol
