Call to action! Those gardeners already mentioning their plans to plant more than usual are our leaders this year! These crazy governments have made this site one of the most important! Grow Baby Grow! The extra you give away is going to ripple back up the channel of distribution and ease the pain those idiots in Europe will cause as the reality of the spring planting failure over there sinks in this summer!
We always plant more than we need. Admittedly, it's partly because we like to garden, but mostly so we can give fresh produce to the local food pantry. Most of the gardeners here donate in one way or another. We all do what we can.
I plan to grow more as long as I am able. One thing I'm curious about is squashes. I like them more than ever. Of what I grew last year, I still have Pink Banana, Red Kuri, and Costata romanesca. I long ago ate all of the Galeux d'Eysine, the tastiest and best texture of the bunch. Pink Banana and Illinois are too big, so this year I'm cutting back on those and adding two types of Buttercups. mI hope they have the flavor and texture we love, but the smaller size will be more convenient. Definitely gift size, people ask "what will I do with this" when offered the big types. Butternut don't grow for me. Summer squashes are nice gifts too. I'm growing five types of potato this year. People seem to enjoy receiving those. I've also given away apples, garlic, onions, and tomatoes. Gardening and sharing also helps because food becoming more expensive.
