One fire near Huntsville was about twenty miles from us. The other was between Midway and Huntsville but still a ways off from us. There was another one that was small. There was one down by College Station but it was on the far side and not close to us at all. I could smell someone burning something last night but it must have been trash in a container. It's not legal but people still do it.They seem to discount sparks that might fly off of it. We are okay but some of those people closer lost everything they had.

This will give you an idea of where they are, the gray shading is the area being covered by smoke, darker the gray heavier the smoke. I am at the northwest of the circle called Dallas.
The big fire right above the or in Fort Worth is an area of homes around Possum Kingdom lake, it burned heavily back in April and suddenly caught fire again two days ago. It's beginning to look like a burned out wasteland up there. They have hard hotter and dryer weather than we have so it's all going up pretty quickly.

One of the bad things about the fighting of this fire is that there are so many being fought that there are none of the really large water tanker airplanes available to aid the firefighters of this particular fires. It's all being done by small planes, helicopters and firefighters on the ground.

I also found this map that shows how severe the drought is in Texas and the four states surrounding us. http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/

There's a huge fire on Ft. Hood which has been burning since the middle of last week. There is also another fire that was put out, but rekindled, near Mother Neff State Park. It seems that if that park isn't flooded, it's on fire. Hexed!
We have been very fortunate, and very, very vigilant. We have a short-cropped "burn zone" around our buildings, and so far have had no fires in our area. We've seen burned areas on highway medians--someone pulling off can start a fire with their tailpipe.
No one, but NO ONE burns outside now. We have garbage pick-up, and have offered to dispose of the non-burnables for our two neighbors. The burnables are just stacked until the rains come.
