I went out this morning to check my plants as I do every morning and to my surprise I find a Passion Flower in half bloom. In my excitement I run over to see what I've got and EVEN more surprisingly I hear a pop and it suddenly springs open the rest of the way. Then slowly the anthers moved into place. It was AMAZING. I have never seen a flower open right in front of my eyes before, it was crazy, exciting, and beautiful. As you can tell, I'm very excited. :D :D :D Here are some pics of it, although they are with a phone camera so the quality is not that great.

I know and something that I found odd is that the smell reminds me of boiled peanuts. :p

Yes, boiled peanuts, haha. Weird I know, but I went back a couple more times to smell and I just kept getting boiled peanuts with just a very very small hint of something sweet. Maybe my smeller is broken lol.

I've started my first passion flower plant this year. It's growing, but not nearly ready for blooms. I hope I'm as lucky as you can get to watch one of them right before my very eyes!

I've never seen a passion flower open before my eyes - wish I had. Your flower is so lovely with its multi-layered bloom and gorgeous colour.

I just got a plant like this at the nursery, Does yours make fruit? I bought mine with one it, seems like cheating but I wanted to be sure it was the fruiting variety. My grandmother had a large vine of the non fruiting ones and they make me think of her.

That's a cool story Jon! I can tell it was really memorable for you. I'd love to witness something like that. It's a beautiful bloom too.

Glendann - Yes, it is a May Pops (Passiflora incarnata). The "pop" I heard would explain the name.

Featherphobia - Mine does produce fruit, but they are not edible as far as I know. I know there are other species that do produce fruit that are edible though.

No wonder you were excited FF, how wonderful to watch a flower opening before your eyes, and what a beauty it is. I thought I had lost my passion flower after the harsh winter we have had and I cut it back hard and was thrilled to see about four new shoots appearing.

Mine is edible the reason people get sick is if they eat a complete fruit as it is a sedative and you may over dose. You can buy it over the counter in the vitamin area as Passion Flower and Valerian (sp)Root its a Valium type herb.

It is a stunning flower. I love the purple ruff it is wearing, and how cool to see it opening. I don't have any in my garden, don't think I have the room, but I am very tempted as they are stunning.

EJ, if you do get some, I recommend some way of keeping them contained as they can become invasive. Maybe something like a six inch wide piece of metal or plastic around the plant to whatever width you want it to inhabit. But I do recommend them as they are a great climbing vine.
