My drive way is almost a 1/4 mile long and pretty much wooded on either side of it. I drove the car out a while ago to get the mail and the paper. As I came up to a section of the drive way we call the "Cut" as there are 6 ft high banks on either side, I saw something on the side of a tree. Since it was only about 2 ft. or so off the ground, I thought it was squirrel that had jumped up there. As I got closer, a Pilated Woodpecker flew off into another tree. I lost him after that. I have never seen one here before and I grew up here as a kid. I would have to say that they are fairly rare around here.
I looked them up and we are in their zone, but would have to say that they just aren't that common. I didn't see a second one, so they are not traveling as a pair that I saw.
Wow, We see them often driving down the back roads. I just saw one this morning while delivering eggs. It flew in front of me and landed on a tree. I pulled over to watch it but it quickly scooted round back of the tree and played hid-n-seek with me. Silly thing.
