I planted celery this year for the first time and it did very good. I don't know what kind of celery it is but the stalks were dark green down to the ground not blanched like in the market and it lasted in the fridge longer. There is one stalk left in the garden that has survived some hard freezes and looks great. Can anybody tell me how hardy is celery.
I got mine in the house and put away well before we had very cold weather. I made a very large mistake when I planted it. I planted 30 of them. I was giving it away. But I diced it and froze it in baggies. That was wonderful for soups and the like. I will do that again next year. I also chopped the tops. When they were frozen the got brittle and I smashed them. It was good. I could dehydrate them next time.
Bet that won't help extend their life with the weather we are going to get this next week. We are going to be 19 tonight.
Our temps last night was in the low 20s and the celery still looks good. I think next year I will plant some in containers also and place them in the greenhouse when it turns cold. If I still live here that is. PB200001 by tsebmj, on Flickr
Waretrop, that's actually encouraging. I love celery (from plain to in my soups). I've never planted it and never heard of anyone who did. Curious as to why that is when it's so prolific.
