I've researched a little and read a few mixed descriptions about Brandywines (directly related to this hybrid tomato). Some have described it to be mildly sweet or generally sweet. But mine ended up hitting me in the face with such an aggressive sourness that reminded me of a lemon! It wasn't until the aftertaste that I noted the typical tomato flavor with a very faint sweetness. The soil I used was a potting mix (these tomatoes were planted in 5-gallon pots) by Miracle-Gro. My mom took care of them while I was away for two weeks, and she told me they started getting blossom end rot, and that brought her to add two tablets of Tums into the soil (two per 5-gallon pot). Is there a particular reason why they might have turned out so sour? Is it the Tums?
High acid and low sugar tomatoes tend to be very tart or sour. Brandywine is one tomato variety that has high acid. It's been said though that is has a great tomato flavour. Hope this helps E.T.
Black crim I know and Black Russian, like black crim but bigger. My favourite tomato is “coeur du boeuf” beef heart. I have never come across Cherokee purple. I have Black Russian this year.
Just purchased a few Cherokee purple tomatoes yesterday at a roadside market. They're looking so very tasty!
Catdaddy, I think you're going to LOVE the Cherokee Purple tomato. By the way, what part of S.C. is Lugoff in? I grew up mainly in Pickens County, very close to Table Rock State Park.
I grew them a couple years ago. I didn't like their shape as they didn't make a great slicer. I needed a nice slicer. I dont remember the taste as being anything spectacular.
