I have just watched the BBC news and couldn't believe the flooding in the lake district and SW Scotland. They showed Dumfries and the river that I posted a piccy of with the chaps fly fishing, and that river is way up and over the banks! The town is aflood. So, my message is for you Eileen, I hope you are okay and dry. It looks like a hell of a lot more rain is due to fall in the north of England over night. It must be terrifying and upsetting to see your home being flooded. My thoughts are with these people.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8366360.stm Here is an article from the BBC. We lunch in Keswick in the Lakes on our way home from Dumfries, just a week ago!
EJ we're fine and dry here in the village for the time being. The local river (the River Almond) has burst its banks though and has flooded fields, footpaths and some roads. Thankfully our cottage is on much higher ground and the water would have to rise by around another six feet before we need to be concerned. We have discovered another leak in the roof though and can't get up to repair it as the slates are way too slippery to walk on or even put a ladder against it. Let's hope the rain eases off soon and let's us get up there before any real damage is done. Hopefully, next year we'll have enough saved to get some decent slaters in to replace the whole roof and put an end to all this worry when it rains heavily. I have a friend who lives just outside Dumfries and I can't get a hold of her at the moment. Fingers crossed she's OK and hasn't been flooded out.
Dramatic developments there! It's good to learn that you are ok Eileen. I am sorry to learn hear that you can't reach your friend, How about mobile service--is that out as well? Thanks for the posting and link, EJ. You are a good one...I'm glad that you are back home while this is going on.
It's good you are back home EJ. I would hate to see you have to travel under those conditions. I hope the rain eases or stops soon. dooley
Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear. The water amounts reported are enormous! There must be lots of damage in the affected areas. Poor people.
I cant believe that an hours drive away from us has 8 and a half foot of water in the village ( Cockermouth) we are so lucky here in Blackpool and on the Fylde coast we rarely get hit bad by weather, yes we have had some fierce winds and a lot of rain and my friends gable end was blown off, but we don't get the floods like others, the rain although heavy has not been unexpected for this time of year, My thought have to e with the people of the affected areas and the family of the police man missing after being near the bridge when it collapsed, There is nothing as fierce and unpredictable as the elements.
What is the latest on the flooding and our GS members? Is everyone still OK? Sending prayers out for all the families affected.
Last I heard early this morning was the flood waters were receding and they are doing safety checks on the bridges and houses around the areas flooded, after the loss of the brave policeman they are making sure everywhere is safe, may our thought be with his family at the awful time. Thanks for the concern, I still feel very blessed that we were relatively so close, yet so unharmed but these terrible floods.
