I just recieved a very interesting bouquet of tropical proteas and bird of paradise from my dad on Maui - he said he dreamed of sending me flowers, so he did! :-D They're quite huge - this is the largest vase I have. This brought to mind the many kinds of things we give as gifts from our gardens (buckets of zucchini, bunches of flowers, herbs, dried fruit, etc.) - what have you used from your garden as gifts to others, or what have you recieved? In this case they are cut flowers, of course, but last year I was given some parrot tulip bulbs and I loved them - I was given an azalea by another gardener, and gave away quarts of dried prunes from my italian prune tree. I am planning on digging up and dividing some of my lilies to give away this fall also... How about you?
I just potted up pots of herbs to give to a couple of neighbors. Everyone gets zucchini and tomatoes in summer. Whatever I have that I can't use. I give the lady next door pansies and roses from my bushes. I also give them cookies and muffins. The flowers are lovely. dooley
I love your vase of flowers Primsong - very unusual and lovely colours too. Your dad has good taste. I give away lots of seeds and young plants as well as fruit from my garden. Friends and neighbours give me theirs in return which is lovely. :-D My kids know just what to get me for birthdays and Christmas - either plants or Garden centre vouchers!!! I'm very easy to please.
I just made 12 loaves of zucchini bread that I made from the zucchini I picked from my vegetable garden and gave them to the neighbors!
Beautiful flowers Primsong. I can't remember the last time I received flowers from anyone :'( When I get cucumbers from my garden, I make what seems like hundreds of jars of sweet pickles and everyone we know get some as gifts. I am the owner of a really large rEcycle list, the list is for passing on items you no longer want to someone who does so that the items do not end up in the landfill. Anyway, I have given away several unneeded starters of that large white shrub rose in my front yard. I thinned out the hollyhock plants this spring, gave away almost 60 seedlings. And just last night a lady came by to get the 9 okra seedlings that I had leftover after planting all I had room for.
Spoil me? That he does! He sent me scads of tomato seeds last year and I ended up having to give most of them away, there were so many! He has most of his backyard in raised beds with organic veggies going and gives lots away to local families. Helps to be in the tropics where things grow year round, I'm sure. 8) Jubabe - mmmm, zucchini bread! Toni - I use a 'freecycle' list here sometimes for oddball items from our remodeling we were doing, but it had never occurred to me to use it for extra plants! Thanks for the idea - I'll have to keep it in mind.
