    Not for the faint....

A fungus that eats flies. This series shows a fungus devouring a green bottle fly. If you have a weak stomach do not look.

It seems to start in the head (probably the brain). You will notice in this first image that there is signs of the fungus in the eyes and on the head of the fly.

In this image you can see that the fungus has become exposed on the external joints and crevices of the fly.

The fungus will eventually devour the fly, leaving nothing but a shell.

Wow, after seeing that, getting the dead skunk out from under the porch doesn't seem like such a gross task after all.
I think this is going to be an "eeewwww" day . . . .

2 dead possums in the rectory attic where I worked. No amount of editing would make this story a candidate for this forum topic.

I find it fascinating and not in the least disgusting. I have heard of caterpillars and ants being eaten alive by fungi but have never actually seen this happening to a fly. Mother Nature has so much to teach us. :-D

Eileen, if you find a fly being eaten by a fungus fascinating, would you like to come get the skunk for me? You might find that very interesting. I'm sure Carolyn would help out.
Carolyn, I have no idea how it died, probably from over-eating.
Blissful, the only good thing about that is there were not three possums!

It's not that I find it disgusting, for me. I'm just worried I would incorporate metaphysics and philosophy into this subject and upset a whole lot of forum members.
