In spring we occasionally get a fly over of water fowl. This week we had a large flock of either egrets or Fosters' Terns pass overhead. Fly-over of water birds ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) We aren't sure exactly, but are leaning toward identifying them as terns. Fosters' terns? ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) Anyone have an idea?
My, that's a big flock of whatever it is! The only flocks we get are starlings when they gather to fly south in autumn. I once learned a child's poem about terns: Said baby tern to mother tern: - Please may I have a brother? Said mother tern to baby tern: - Yes, one good tern deserves another. I found it sweet and funny.
Egrets in flight have their legs trailing and their necks held in an S shape, like herons, so I don't think that's what they are. With those black wing tips they could be Fosters' terns although I can't make out any black heads or the deeply forked tails.
