The carrots were started indoors and were planted in a 24" deep container filled with compost. Any advice what went wrong?

Did you transplant the carrots? If so, that may be the problem. Root vegetables just hate to be transplanted.
Your lettuce looks really, really good!

Lettuce is beautiful. That fork does not affect the taste so just eat them anyway.

Thanks Marlin, yes I did transplant them just like other plants I grow every year beans tomatoes eggplants peppers etc. I tried carrots for the first time this year. I am gonna direct sow them again in the fall and will share the results.

Mart, you bet i'll eat them anyway :D. Thanks for complementing the lettuce; now they will taste extra delicious!

They look yummy. If my carrots turn out forked, it will likely be due to so many ROCKS around here. You cannot go 2 inches without finding more rocks.

Mine always turn out that way. We thought it was all the rock but I know a plant can move mountains. I changes the kinds we grew, that didn't change anything. I thought it was because we didn't thin them out well enough but now I am not sure...

Next year my hubby doesn't want to plant them. :'( :'( :'(

Barb, when we lived in upstate NY and had rocks everywhere, I learned from an ex-farmer neighbor to make a 1' deep trench, fill it with sand, and plant carrot seed mixed with more sand, which cuts down on the thinning somewhat. Labor intensive but it works. Plus, the sand helps lighten the soil--a problem you may not have.

AA, mine were in a deep container but still! Waretrop, I have always read on topics like gardening for beginners that carrots are easiest to grow..I highly doubt that! I will try again in the fall if the results are similar then it's simply not worth my time and efforts.
