Ice lanterns! Plastic bowls full of water left outside to freeze for one or more days depending on the temps. I turn them upside down, wipe the bowl with a warm cloth to get the ice loose, make a hole in the bottom of the lump of ice which now is the top, empty out water, and put a candle inside. Hardly any work involved and the entrance area looks very welcoming with a row of these: I'm only allowed to borrow two or three of the kitchen bowls at a time so I have to make lanterns over several days if I want many. It's my husband's kitchen you see. I'm only welcome if I want to bake something.
Thanks! I hardly see anybody around in winter, and the lanterns are not there in summer so I haven't heard any compliments. Thanks! No talent needed here, Eileen. Just bowls, water and freezing temps. I did fill up the bowls all by myself though. Thanks. Not my idea, people have been doing this for decades. I can put food colouring in the water to get different coloured lanterns but I like them best clear. I also read a tip about boiling the water first to get icy clear lanterns but I like the structure in them and I think they're icy clear enough as they are.
