From this. I found a mole hill in the grass path. When I dug down to find the run I discovered four huge rocks and bags of broken bricks. The rocks took four strong lads to move. Via To. Not a bad days effort I think.
There are places in the same path where there are definite runs. (You sink when you tread there.) I dread to dig in case there are more rocks like these underneath. It took all the soil I could find to fill the hole.
Hopefully you'll have disturbed the mole enough for it to move on elsewhere. Creating a rockery is a great way to make use of all the rocks you discovered.
We have chipmunk holes mostly in my flower beds...the little stinkers like to dig under my plants. We used to plant our own trees when we first moved here but after hitting rocks for 2 trees, we decided from now on we will pay to have them dig and hit rocks. I suppose the broken bricks in the bags were buried so they didn't have to toss them out. The rocks look nice now, you did a good job.
I have been setting traps with peanut butter and snapping them dead all this last week. They have tunneled through my high tunnels and garden, but have ruined tomato plants in the high tunnels. dead! I think I have killed 9 so far.
Palustris,..hard to believe when looking at those rocks that they were hidden all the time,..i see you made good use of them,..alas the Moles are still somewhere,..luckily we don't have any Moles in Ireland. =================================================================================== Carolyn,..sorry to see you have the little critters,..looks like they are causing havoc in your tunnels,..nine so far!,..crikey you have a whole clan of them,..keep setting the traps you are reducing the numbers very well.
Moles and voles...nasty critters! That was a lot of work but a nice visual result from all your labor.
Why the rocks are in the garden is something of a mystery, but why they are in the area is simple. This was once the bottom of a glacial lake and the rocks were brought from all down the western side of Britain by the glacier in the last Ice Age. The huge numbers of house bricks are from the three houses which were here which fell down in the 1960's and were never cleared away.
