It's not the coldest morning we have had this winter, but it is -30.8°C out there right now.(-23.4°F)As I was checking the thermometer outside my window I looked down at this stained glass piece leaning on the window and noticed something funny. Do you see it?

On the up side for me, I went to the greenhouse where I am keeping the rabbits for the time being, as the day progressed it was in the 50's without any heat in there. That was just the sunlight doing the heating. It makes it a little more tolerable to do those chores.

A little warmer this morning ... -22°C or -7.6°F. No chance of a warm up for the rest of the week, and some more snow on the way. This is more like the winters I remember as a child, we just haven't had one for a very long time. My window no longer has ice on it :)

When I worked in Alaska, I rented a converted barn. It was in the interior of the state and got really cold in the winter.
In that dwelling there were two spots on the wall panelling where circles of white ice would form. My house partner at the time and I called it our thermometer because the colder it was the larger the circles of ice would get!
    It was really cold there.
I once stood outside with some warm water in a quart container and threw it up into the air and it came down as ice crystal powder...it was like talc.
It was regularly -40-60° F there.

Well, here is the sad news from waretrop land. My house furnace had a bad valve in the water line and it failed. I have plenty of alternative heat for my living space but there is a small part in the basement that couldn't be heated. The pipe froze and flooded the finished basement.

On a happy note the greenhouse is doing great. I should move into it.

Oh no! I hope that you didn't lose everything in your basement Waretrop! One of the thoughts that keeps me up on winters stormy nights is the thought of the furnace quitting. We have a woodstove but it only heats the back of the house. The front of the house is what gets the worst part of the winter storms ... the north winds. I am so sick of winter already ... it started in November this year and has not let up! I'm looking forward to Monday's forecast of -8°C (17.6°F) that should feel almost tropical after what we have seen this month!
