Over the last few years I have been putting out fruit for the Mockingbirds, sliced apples, oranges, raisins, cranberries, etc. But either the squirrels would get there first or a opossum passing by in the night would knock the stand over.

Now I think we have a stand that can't be knocked over. But the squirrels can still get to it  It's about 4 feet away from the fence and no where near any other surface suitable for self launching but the other day Randy watched a squirrel leap from the pointy top of a fence picket and land effortlessly in the silver bowl, grab a chunk of apple and leap down to the ground.

The post is a 4"x4" cedar post, it's attached to a metal post that is hammered down into the ground about 1.5 feet then attached to the cedar post with deck screws. I found the silver bowl at the thrift store, Randy drilled a few small holes for drainage and screwed it to the post.
Next spring I want to plant a vine at the base and help it climb up the post.

What a good idea Toni. Those aquirrels will always find a way to get to food though won't they? I hope they leave enough for the other wildlife that visits your garden.

Love that dish. Sure hope the birds get more of the fruit than the squirrels.

Great job Toni. It looks mighty sturdy and wind resistant. Those squirrels are hard to stop though!

Toni that is a neat idea.

Frank thanks for sharing that cute video of the squirrel assault course. They are definitely determined critters. I love watching our squirrels trying to figure out how to get into the bird feeder.

Toni I like the stand, and mockingbirds are absolutely one of my all-time favorite birds. If I was a bird...I would want to be a mockingbird and be able to sing all those songs.

Thanks for the nice comments on the fruit feeder. That size bowl looks weird up on such a tall post, it's 4 feet tall. But I hope to eventually find a larger one to replace it. So far the squirrel and a couple of doves have been the only visitors. Hopefully the Mockingbirds are visiting and I just don't see them.

I think your feeder is lovely. Of course you need a bigger bowl. You can't keep those squirrels away anyway so you might as well put out enough food for them as well. :D
