Yesterday evening I noticed 2 hummers fighting out by the feeder. At first I thought it was a male and a female trying to mate. Especially when they went to the ground and layed there. Then they flew up and started fighting again. And I noticed they were both males! They were fighting for territory over the feeder.
Hummers are VERY territorial, as you observed. Never try to break up a hummingbird fight-those beaks are lethal!
