can anyone tell me is it ok to transplant some gerber daisies now . Andif I do will they be ok for next spring to come back up?
In most of the U.S. Gerberas are an annual. You should be able to overwinter them in a greenhouse or indoors as a houseplant. When you dig them out of the ground to bring inside, be sure to dig a large enough area around them so as to not damage the roots. In the spring when you replant them outside, gently divide them to have more plants.
Gerberas are typically a houseplant or summer annual up here. I'm guessing you are Z5 like me (SW MI). One mild winter several years ago, many things survived in the garden, including Gerberas. If you want for fun, plant one and cover it heavily with a mulch or bag of leaves to see if it over winters. I have done this successfully for with other tenders like Black and blue salvia and Pineapple sage. Ron
My Gerberas made it through the winter in South Carolina but in New Jersey, I had to bring them inside. I did what Toni advised you to do. I wasn't allowed to call them Gerberas back then, my oldest daughter insisted they were "Sarah Daisies".
I have never tried to keep Gerbers alive over the winter. I have started planting mostly perineals in my outside beds as I do get so tired of having to plant every year. However, I do miss some of the pretty annuals like this one.
DAISIES Thank you for all your responses,I didnt kmow Icould bring in gerber daisies inside, Do you think I should dig up the ones I have planted outside. Should they be in alot of light? This is my first year to have them the red ones were beautiful.I will have them next year for sure. Especiallyif they stay nie till spring. Thank you Margie
