Yep, I got a new camera from my son for Jul. Its a canon powershot 10mega pixels. I love it! Now if i can just put down the instruction manual when i take pics i might do alright. Compared to my other camera this one does everything but paint the picture by its self. (little man included complete with easal and paints) I'm working on shutter speed since my goal is to get the northern lights. Its just 6:30 at night here or 18:30 so the lights should come out soon and then i can practice on them. In the mean time i have practiced on settings. Since its dark here now all the time practally i'm in night mode most of the time. the other mode is snow i'm using. So heres what i got so far out of about 800 shots, this past week i ended up with about 6. lol. Hey its a long winter here, i got lots of time.

Sunset at about 12:00 noon. Give or take.

The fjord is starting to freeze over, and taken about the same time as above pic. I'm also practicing with the zoom, this is taken out my front door. you can see the boat house, and the ice starting to freeze.

Now this one was taken an hour later. Pretty dark huh,,,lol. I used the almost full moon to see how it would take. the light and dark. You can barely see the light on the ice in the water. So i have to practice alittle more with that.

The last one was taken about 5:30 this evening or 17:30. I got the shutter speed to open longer, and this was the only pic that wasn't blurry since i don't have a tripod. Also taken just outside my front door.

The moon is still in the same area, just higher in the sky is all. It will start to move later tonight when the northern lights come out. All that snow we had, 3 ft or 1 meter has compacted down to about 30cm or 1 ft now, and its a solid sheet of ice. I'm going to need my ice skates to get to the car to use as a tripod,,,,lol.

    Ahhhhh winter.....

Be sure to take the manual with you so we get to see at least a couple of holiday pictures.

I love photo 1 and 2, so dark and mystical.

Looking forward to photos of Northern Sweden Biita, I haven't ventured there yet

Regarding snapping photos of the northern lights I'm no photography expert but wouldn't you need a longer exposure than a normal shot to pick on the fainter light? Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I love playing with a new camera but I admit that I couldn't take as good shots as you have when I first got mine. Myabe it was because I didn't even pick up the manual but expected to know all about it anyway. I love the first two shots you've shown us but the first is definately my favourite.

    Thanks all!

Frank: I have on this camera where you can control the shutter speed. it goes, -2,,-1,,0,,1,,2----I have it on 2 right now, which lets me have an opening of about 10 seconds. But! I can also control thru the button that you click on to take the pic, with the shutters open longer too. I just keep clicking until it comes thru on the window, the amount of light i need or want. The problem is once i have it focused, and the right amount of light, i somehow end up clicking it an extra time and let in too much light or i click it back to the normal amount,,,lol. sigh. Thank goodness for delete. But i'll get the hang of it. I actually got one of the lights, but ofcourse its a big blur. lol. So i just wait for them to come across the mountain and go back out.

Great pictures Biita. We will be waiting for more!!

I got a new camera, although it is not much different than my old one. It does have 'anti blur', so that will help. I It is a Fuji 10 megapixel and 5x zoom. I don't have anything as interesting to 'shoot' as you do. I am just into the manual at the moment.

    Happy holidays!

    Thanks again all!

Theres anti blur, high speed, anti red eye, auto focus, auto rotation, red beam, multi focus, laser beam, stitching, color swatching, color bleeding........what does all this mean? I'm still looking it all up,,,,lol. I have no clue. It does zoom up to 12x.

Hiyah Biita--When I lived in Alaska I took many fotos of the Northern Lights. I always had to use a statief and left the shutter open for 20-40 seconds, depending upon what the apiture setting was. I used a SLR camera then.
My fotos of the lights always appeared "fuzzy" because they constantly moved, but the representation was still very good.
Does your camera allow you to make fotos manually---and set your apiture or shutter speed yourself?
Precisely what sort of camera do you have?
Don't give up on that camera...you will have an eager audience waiting here. ;)
