Today when I was reading the Sunday paper I saw an article on what not to give your dog for treats at Christmas. Then, it gave a simple recipe for making gingerbread cookies for a treat. It takes 3 cups of whole wheat flour, 1/2 teaspoon gr. ginger, 1 teaspoon gr. cinnamon, 1/2 cup molasses, 1/4 cup of vegetable oil, and 1/2 cup of water. Mix it all up, roll it out to quarter of an inch. Cut with small Christmas cookie cutters, Bake at 325 degs for 15 to 20 minutes or until set. I made some for Chance this afternoon and she loved them. She would have eaten all of them at one go if dr had given her a choice. It did say not to give your dog sugary treats or treats made with white flour or leavening. I can see the sugary treats but white flour or leavening. Maybe not enough nutrients? dooley
All the nurtients have been processed out of white and whole wheat flour so it's more of a filler than a food product. But since treats are not the main or only food source, the flour in them won't be a problem.....unless the dog is alergic to wheat. Never feed your dog a dry or canned dog food with Wheat or Corn flour as the first ingredient. It won't kill them but it isn't providing them with any food value either, it just fills them up. Leavening in unbaked dough can kill them, it can continue to expand in their stomach blocking it or in the intestines causing them to rupture.
