Help! I'm drowning in a sea of tomatoes, and that hand you see sticking up from the red waves is me, going under for the third time.
I'm canning every other day--canned tomatoes, tomato juice, marinara sauce--luckily I have enough jars.
This won't last. The determinate tomatoes we planted are slowing down--heat has stopped pollination so there are no new tomatoes setting on. I must admit it's not breaking my heart!
So, anyone else treading tomato juice and clinging to a Big Buoy (sorry for the pun) to keep from sinking?

O.K. now you tell me this after i started all those tomato plants for the tomato contest. I have some old peanut butter jars around I did not throw away. And we are almost done with a pickle jar. 1.....2....3.....4.....I wonder how many we need for a sea of tomatoes........small sea?.....large sea? I wonder if any of the plants are Big Buoys? Perhaps I don't need to panic just yet, maybe the deer will eat some blossoms......maybe....Someone throw Jane something that floats!!

I can just picture a 7 foot high mound of tomatoes on the side of the highway with a hand sticking out of the middle waving at cars driving by. Maybe the hand holds a sign reading... "Take a box from the table, fill it with tomatoes and see if you find the prize inside"

Yes ! Me ! I have never seen so many tomatoes in my life. I have hauled tomatoes to everyone I know and a few I didnt know. Tried to give a sack full to the garbage man and he politely declined saying he was in the same sea. Just have six late plants going now and I am glad.

And here I sit with 4 medium size Roma tomatoes in the freezer waiting for a few more to join them before I can make just one jar of tomato sauce. There are 3 out there that I hope will eventually ripen.

Of course, if I had more than one plant I might be getting a better crop.

Toni, look for a very large box arriving in the mail. The roadside sign didn't work . . . .
Mart, it's all your fault with the Pepsi bottles buried with manure in them, so when I watered the plants got manure tea. It's all your fault. Look for a very large box arriving in the mail . . . .

I'm safe from drowning, since I have my one patio tomato plant that gives me a couple every few days.

I would love a huge crop someday, I make a super thick garlicky pasta sauce -better than chicken soup for what ails you!

Cris, would you share that recipe for the super thick garlicky pasta sauce? Not that I'm desperate for recipes that use tomatoes . . . .

Not me, YET. We have 200+ plants in the ground and just picked our first tomatoes this week. All 1 peck of them. But the farmers markets never seem to have enough of them there, so this year I hope I can put a lot more on my table.

I hope you can (no pun intended there) get a big buoy in your garden/kitchen soon.

jerry...good luck on that big buoy variety. We'll all throw you one, too, if need be. And I would donate a peanut butter jar, but mine are all plastic and I don't think they will hold up to the boiling water very well. Check with the local goodwill store, maybe someone is cleaning out their grandmas jar collection and will donate some of those glass ones that they used to come in( like from the '70's).

I only have 50 or 60 plants this year. that wont been enough for me but I will probably buy some to can my maximum. I do have enough oregano and parsley and garlic and bell peckers to make flavored sauce. I have the 100 pecker plants that is beginning to make fruit alredy.

marlingardener and carolyn keiper, good for both of you. Can, can, can.....

LOL ! I was blaming it on the epsom salts !! Oh No ! Pleeease don`t send more.

Its not too late for tomatoes as long as you can keep them watered and give a bit of shade during the hottest part of the day. I thought about fall tomatoes,, but after this,, it was a fleeting thought.

I am turning a pale shade of green with envy for all the ripe tomatoes. We have over 30 plants. I'm hoping they all produce with gusto.
