Does anyone have any good recipes that use pears. Our tree is loaded - I don;t like them and I don't can them. Any ideas?

so how much would postage be to ship me about 10 pounds of those pears? My SIL usually keeps me stocked with pears for preserves and a wonderful mincemeat type recipe but their trees have been barren for three years and we have really been missing them. :'(

I will post the Pear Mincemeat recipe in the Recipes and Cooking forum. It is really easy and makes a wonderful Thanksgiving or Christmas pie. Freezes perfectly and keeps for about a year.

that will teach me to pay attention to where posts are, I didn't realize that you had this one in the Recipes and Cooking forum.

Mincemeat made with Pears instead of meat

    5 pounds pears, coarsely chopped
    1 chopped, peeled orange
    1 pound seedless raisins
    4 cups sugar
    3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
    1 1/2 teaspoons nutmeg
2 teaspoons each of ground cinnamon and allspice
1 teaspoon each of ground ginger and cloves

In a large kettle bring everything to a boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 2 hours or until very thick.....stirring occasionally

Cool, pack and freeze. For a Pie, place 4 cups thawed mixture and one Tablespoon butter in a pie shell, top with more crust, bake at 425 degrees or 40-45 minutes.

The mixture can be used in other recipes calling for mincemeat.

    Hi Polly,
If you have extra fruit you might call your local food bank or church. Maybe the Youth Group would come out and pick pears for the elderly church members. Sure hate to see it go to waste :-D
We have Italian Prune trees in our backyard, there was so much fruit (not ripe yet) that it broke the poor old tree in half :( We really should have been paying more attention
