I think good things happen all the time, but the news mainly focus on the bad things. You've picked some nice examples there, bunkie.

great concept here. a movement which ties in to eating locally and encouraging sustainability. community kitchens, available in many cities across the country. they cook with local food, also have a free entree so that anyone can eat, the prices are very modest, and priced according to portion size - to reduce waste. they do not use plastic etc. we even have one in Spokane! http://www.oneworldspokane.com/ One World Everybody Eats http://www.oneworldeverybodyeats.com/home.html Vision Statement: * We are dedicated to eliminating world hunger. * We are dedicated to serving organic unprocessed food. * We are dedicated to feeding and including all members of our community. * We are dedicated to eliminating waste in the food industry. * We believe that we can trust our customers to be inspired, honest and fair in their exchange of money and/or work for the fresh, gourmet, organic food we prepare both mindfully and in a heartfelt way each day....
Hey Bunkie - I am almost your neighbor. I live just 5 hours south of you. Only been through Spokane a couple of times. Next time I'm up that way I'll PM you ahead of time.
We are in the sticks/mountains too, but I love it. I have to drive 125 miles one way and 150 the other to get to a decent grocery store. We have 1 about 35 miles from where I am that gets my by but it's so expensive because it's in a resort town. 'Nother reason to garden, oh yeah! I love the Sandpoint/Couer d'Alene area. My hubby hauls out of Ritzville on occasion. Been to Deer Park to pick up a cow once. That's a story all by itself!

I took a special interest in the "Save Fortis Green Allotments" story because being an allotment holder it has a special meaning to me. The battle isn't actually over yet as not all of the money has yet been accumulated to buy the land from the water company. The deadline for the offer is 31 March 2010...so time is getting close. I have been communicating with those folks and they are hopeful that they will raise the rest of the money needed to buy the garden land. My fingers are crossed. They have been getting some good publicity there and some famous folks have been supporting them and speaking up for their cause. I shall be watching how this develops. For those interested here is the link to the allotment gardens's website. If you navigate around you can find out all about what's happening to these gardners. http://www.savefortisgreenallotments.com/index.htm
It IS a great project, Bunkie. I have first hand knowledge of battling it out to keep one's land. That's why we bought our land so that we can garden the way that we want and not have to always be in fear of loosing our gardens. It is awkward to support them monetarily, but they appreciate support in the form of e-mails. I really hope that they can be successful.
me too sjoerd! another interesting event to get people gardening by a large US coporation... Grow a Triscuit Tree in Your Backyard http://www.fooducate.com/blog/2010/03/1 ... oducate%29 Marketing genius or smoke and mirrors? Triscuits, those slightly salty wheat thins, are being sold with a small surprise inside. No, not a toy from China, rather a small bag filled with ... seeds!.........
