The blimp was going over our area the last couple days. I think they were taking people to the big air show EAA in Oshkosh that has been going on. It is all about airplanes. People spend the week in campers, tents and even planes to enjoy all the informational things at the EAA..This draws many people to the area.
It's quite a clever piece of marketing, a lot of the time when I think of 'blimp' I think of 'Goodyear' also. Thanks for posting Sherry.
Cool! I can't remember ever seeing a blimp around here. We do see quite a few hot air balloons though.
More than 20 years ago, Goodyear had a blimp hanger at the Addison Airport across the street from my parents print shop. It would be in the area in the spring for the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament weekend and again in the fall for some of the Cowboy's football games, specifically the Thanksgiving day game. It really knows how to draw a crowd. The area has gotten too crowded now so the hanger is north of Ft. Worth now.
I was hoping I would find someone that has had a ride in one...I am not sure if I would like it or not. But it was interesting. He saw me taking pictures and actually made a circle around us and then on his way...Could you see the ropes or wire hanging down in some of the pictures? I think I could see it on the third picture and you could see them as they went by...I am not sure what they are for...maybe to help get them down???Here is a picture of them going into land...just before the tree line... It looked very easy to navigate how he made it go up straighter and then put the nose down alot...or maybe it was the wind?
Some of the lines hanging down from the blimp are to discharge static electricity and keep the blimp from exploding. The rest are the lines that the ground crew members grab when it settles in for landing.
I lived in some apartments (1972) across the street from Redbird Airport (in Dallas). They would hanger the blimp there and let me tell you they are HUGE. My son and I walked across the street and were standing under the blimp, near the control basket. What a sight! Amazing, simply amazing! :-o :-o It was quite an experience, especially for a 9 year old.
