I know I complain about the Texas grass and weeds that grow faster than I can pull. But I swear I will never fuss again. With the heat and getting late in the season tomatoes have started to blister. At least the ones on top do. But there is a bright side. Since grass is nearly knee deep, the tomatoes under that grass are beautiful, growing great and no blistering. Downside? I gotta keep canning them.
Thank You, At least we will have plenty of tomatoes canned for winter. Last year blight got our tomato plants and they didn`t do very well. Just got through picking another three gallon bucket full. And still have to pick the porters. It is a lot of work this time of year just to keep up with the produce. Hope everyones garden does as well.
I'm jealous of your production of tomatoes :-D . I can smell them from here, and my mouth is watering. Have never had to worry about sunburning so it is interesting to hear about. Guess I will go have a store bought bland tomato for my lunch and feed on dreams of your mouth watering sun warmed tomatoes with real flavor. Happy gardening and canning
I usualy get toms from my dad but his plants burned up early. so I 've had to resort to buying them at a road side stand. Glad you've got plently, and thanks to the grass pretty ones too.
I would surely share if you were closer. But south Louisiana and Washington state are a bit far to travel. Funny thing is my tomato vines look pathetic. Heat has made them lose most of their leaves but under that grass, the vines are still producing. I have had a lot of fried green tomatoes. Last year there weren`t enough that we would risk pulling green ones. The best tomato we planted this year has been the improved porter and regular porter. Fewer bugs, made the most, almost no core, and a great slicer or canner. The regular porter ( small salad type) are really doing well. I will plant them both again next year.
Much better to have the toms than the pretty vines. We always get the pretty vines but often have to pull them (and put in the garage) to let the toms ripen after the rains hit. Glad you let the grass grow. My mouth still waters at the thought of vine ripened tomatoes. Guess I'll have to go to the farmer's market tomorrow. East of the mountains get nice hot produce growing weather and they bring in the good fruit and vegies.
One of the other members in your state is having trouble getting her tomatoes off to a good start. Gardening in Washington state must be difficult. Have you thought about moving south a bit?
Too late for moving south. My feet are webbed and I am allergic to the sun On those fall/winters/spring that have 40+ days and night of mist/rain and clouds a trip to the sun is a health need though. Things are always green here though
LOL , I know what you mean. During our summers many here talk about moving to a cooler place. I tell them I can take off enough clothes to get cool but I can`t put on enough to get warm. Our winters average in the low to mid 40`s with only a few weeks of really cold weather. That makes it nice, and many people garden year round here. Guess its all in what we get used to.
