Does anybody know what this plant is called.
It is a Agave, and there are only three in North America, one of them here in Arizona. It only blooms every 6-7 years and this photos were taken last year. We'll see you again in 5 years

    Holy Moly!
That has to rank right up there with the most beautiful flower EVER!
    How tall is the plant?
Is it in a botanical garden?
Surely they'd have to know something about it?
I can't get over seeing a flower that awesome... and green too!
Thanks so much for posting it. I sure hope someone here knows more about it.

My eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw those green flowers. Aren't they just THE most beautiful blooms you've ever seen? I have no real idea what the plant is (could it be Agave celsii?)
but I know I'd love to have one!!!

    cherylad,

To answer your questions, this plant was about 8-10 feet tall and is located in a Arboretum, which is staffed mostly by part time workers. Last time I asked a person about this plant, they never heard about it. Well --- it will bloom again in about 5 years and they will hear about it then !!!!

Wow! that color is so cool. I would have thought someone was dreaming if this had been sent to a flowers shop as a silk plant. "There is no way possible that it was a replica of a real flower" would have been my thought. Now I know. I saw some of the most unreal silks while working there, thinking that people were crazy to produce something so bizarre. Maybe they really were real flower replicas. Thanks for sharing this with all of us who will probably never see this in real life. :stew1:

    eileen,

Since I'am new to this site, I had no idea where you are located. Since I realized you are in Scotland, I offer you a treat --- a "walk" through the Arizona Desert in my web pages.
    Enjoy it. Hans Glauser

Toni you've hit the nail on the head!! Well done with the ID. :D
Hans many thanks for the link. I've looked through a few pages already and will see the rest when I have enough time to concentrate on them properly. So far I'm really impressed by the photographs of plants, wildlife and dramatic scenery. Everything is so different from Scotland that's for sure.

Thank you everybody for your comments and thank you Tony, without you I would still be groping in the dark.
Now I can put a name to the flower in my web site and start looking like I knew what I was talking about.
    Again, many thanks Hans

You're welcome Hans, I was beginning to doubt my googling abilities but I finally got the right combination of keywords entered that took me to that page.

    toni,

this is where I started, at google, and I ended up at cherylad, since she must have posted a question at one time or other about green flowers.
I had no idea about this web site here at all.
Since cherylad was so gracious to give me a few tips, well, here I am.

    Thanks again everybody Hans

Hans... I found my way here looking to ID a plant, too.
And if it's not obvious... I LOVE it here!
I just knew someone would come up with your ID in no time. Way to go Toni!
Hope you stick around and share more of those wonderful desert flowers and desert-scapes with us.
    Welcome to Garden Stew!
