Hi Everyone! I am new (obviously) and live in the mid-Hudson region of NYS. I grow mostly houseplants and focus mainly on orchids, cacti, succulents and other assorted plants. As much as I love to garden outdoors, we have a terrible deer problem so any veggies are container grown. I have a job tending the plants in a True Value store and am anxiously awaiting planting season. I am responsible for all indoor and outdoor plants - a real dream job! Hope to meet others with similar interests, and to offer help and advice while learning from all of you!

Hello from Nebraska! I spent several years working at local nurseries doing the retail plant thing. I have a lot of funny stories about the customers.
(what is a pre ennial?) :D
Hurry up spring!! Take good care of the little baby plants!!

Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone! I'm sure we'll have plenty of things to talk about. Kay, retail is a dimension all its own. I have to explain at least once a day the difference between an annual and a perennial... Oh well, job security! Hi Clem!!!

Still finding my way around this site. I'll be looking into some of the forums to see what's happening there. Seems like everyone is very friendly! Be sure to point me in the right direction according to what I've told you so far!

Welcome to Gardenstew. What part of the Hudson Valley are you from? dr is from the Hudson Valley and we've spent time there. Working with plants must be fun. I go and look at them every time I get anywhere near where they are sold. I'll be starting a new garden soon and looking for a lot of stuff, maybe. dooley

Hi Dooley, I live in Dutchess County, south of Poughkeepsie. Many people know Poughkeepsie as the home of Vassar and Marist colleges. In the last 10 to 15 years, it has increasingly become a bedroom community to NYC - even though we are 90 minutes north.

I too, am looking forward to planting season.. Our last frost date is normally May 15th, so we have a long way to go! Still, I saw daffodils peeking up through the soil in a protected, southern exposure last week. It certainly was a nice sign! This is why I like my orchids - there is always something blooming or preparing to do so.

dr's was born in West Point and was raised in Newburgh. His mom worked in the library in Poughkeepsie for quite a long time. We used to take the train from Wisconsin to New York and get off in Poughkeepsie. dr's niece lives in Glasco, I think. I think his brother is in New Paltz. He doesn't communicate much and moves around some. We know the area pretty well, especially dr.

You wouldn't believe the changes to the area! The old railroad bridge that burned in 1974? It's now the Walkway Over the Hudson, and I've been lucky enough to go up there twice already! http://www.walkway.org/ If you ever get back this way, it is a MUST see!

I hate to be ignorant, but who is dr?
