Ground Work

We have been preparing beds to receive plantlets and for sowing seeds. With these lovely days this ground work continues. I have new strawberry plants arriving tomorrow, so the bed had to be made ready.
First the mulch was rolled back and the soil raked.


Once exposed and the rake was pulled over the ground, it was time to make the holes that the plants will be lowered into.


Then the spud bed. The spuds are chitting and soon we will plant them. But first, the ground work— mulch rolled back and the surface raked.

Then mates, time to break out the hand plough, or “The Spanish Helmet”, as my Bride is want to call it.




Job done, let the spuds chit.

No, the job isn’t done because I also have some broad beans hardening off on the balcony here at home. So we made that ready as well.

Been digging a bed here too, got most of the onion seedlings in today

 

That is quite a bed. You are going to have loads of onions. You must be weeping with joy. Yeah, it is a handy tool. Glad you like it.

I have our first potatoes planted and watch daily for sprouts emerging. None yet.

Thank you Daniel. I know that watching and waiting, full of hope feeling. I am holding off planting the spuds for a week or so more, I want the trenches to dry a little and warm-up a lot before planting.

 

Sjeord it's looking good and I like that tool that you were using for the potatoes.

 

Yes. I am in the same boat. Can't do much with the ground yet, too cold and will be muddy for a bit. I have built some raised beds so will be getting them ready before I get to the main garden I suppose.

Your gardens are too tidy for words, @Sjoerd. Excellent job as always. And the rest of you too. The only fresh, home-grown greens we've got is ground elder. Tasty, nutritious, and we could feed the entire neighbourhood with ground elder stew if need be. In the region I live we consider ourselves lucky if the potatoes are in the soil by May 1st.

 

Thanks so much, Droopy. Yes, ground elder. I have quite enough of that as well. One of there days I am going to eat some as well.
