Okay, my daughter...a new gardner like me...got the idea to grow her own avocados using the pit after she had make quacamole. She did the set-up with the toothpicks and half submerged pit supported by the picks. She said she had read you put the avocado in a dark place to root.

I decided to try the avocado pit growing thing, but when I googled it all the instructions were the same except the sites I got responses from said the avocado pit should be placed in a sunny window to root.

Has anyone had any success with starting a tree from the pit? And if so, dark place or sunny window??? :?: Thanks folks!

I planted mine into a flower pot right away. It sprouted one month later. It cracked the pit apart.

    A few weeks later.

Last week it touched my kitchen ceiling. I cut the top twelve inches off. It will either kill it or it will branch out. I live in Zone 5 so it must be inside during the winter months.

Don, you said "I planted mine in a pot right away". Does this mean you skipped the toothpick and water part and put the avocado pit into the flower pot without growing the root first? If so, I'm amazed it sprouted in a month with any roots! Please clarify. Thanks!

I skipped the water and started it in potting soil in a flower pot on Sept second and it sprouted the first week of October. It was 27 inches by January.

Hiya there. Now that I saw your pics, I am skeptical about mine. I was told the rapidly growing tree in my is an avocado. It's always lush and ever throwing new leaves. Please see the picture below. Is it an avocado? For it does not resemble yours!

PS: If it's one, I grew it from pit too :D

Ok, thanks. I'm going to try it both ways...directly in the soil and one in the water. I'll see which one yields the fastest result. Thanks :stew1:
