So I was watching "Gardeing by the Yard" this morning on the HGTV this morning and there was a segment on how to grow your own Sprouts. This intrigued me. So I searched around the internet and on YouTube and found some great information on the subject. [youtube]F-1V4vtV8Yo&hl[/youtube] Then I thought, "This is a great idea. I should try to grow some." Now you get to see my progress over the next few days. These are my lentils soaking in water over night. I will drain them at some point tomorrow. I am excited about this little mini-adventure in kitchen gardening.
Lentil Sprouts Day 2 I have drained all the water and rinsed them thoroughly. I placed them on the kitchen counter out of direct sunlight. I dampened a paper towel and laid it across the top of the glad container, just to keep some of the moisture in. Some of the lentils have split and I believe I see a couple of tips sticking out. They should be sprouting very soon. Shouldn't be more than a couple more days till I can eat them.
These lentils are sprouting nicely. I rinsed them and drained them. I am curious how they are going to taste. I am going to give them one more day before I taste them.
I'm wondering if the girls would like to try an experiment like that. Like lots of other children, they're not very fond of vegetables unless they can pick them out of the ground or off a plant and eat them straight away. I'd like to know how those lentil sprouts taste.
Fun experiment! I used to grow broccoli sprouts between damp paper towels in the frig, very nice on salads and sandwiches. They sprout quickly.
MAN! Look at the difference from this morning and this evening. The sprouts have nearly tripled in length. As for the taste, I tasted a few. They taste like the bean sprouts that you get in the supermarket with a slight starch flavor from the lentil itself. Interesting. I am thinking about adding some salt to see if that would change the flavor at all. Might eventually add some dressing or vinegrete or something. Do you all have any ideas if I want to eat them by themselves.
Your lentil sprouts are looking really good!! We do exactly the same thing with mung beans. They produce the beansprouts that are used in Chinese cooking and my husband loves being able to use them fresh from the container.
RGA, just interested to know whether you are still preparing lentils like this and have you any final thoughts?
Frank, I've personally been growing them like this for a few weeks now. It works splendidly, and my family is enjoying them on a variety of different things. My favorite is on wraps/tortillas. The most important thing is just to rinse regularly and get the excess water off.
Thanks Flark, I have wanted to do this but just haven't seemed to have gotten around to it yet. Sounds delicious.
As for cooking ideas or eating ideas have you thought of sauteing them in some sesame oil or olive oil? Just add a little salt and pepper and I bet they would taste awesome.
