Pinto beans are so inexpensive here in the Southwest that I've never bothered to grow them.

Years ago, my elderly neighbors and gardening mentor, used to grow them for green beans. She planted beans that she bought from the local grocery store. It used to amaze me that I'd buy "proper" green bean seed and my harvest was never up to hers.

It didn't enter my mind thirty years ago that she got a better harvest because she planted beans that did well in our desert climate. Makes me laugh now to thing about that.

My grandmother did the same thing. Flat green beans were my favorite.
