I went to check on my pole and bush beans.
I could only see 1 pepper from the bottom of the hill.[IMG]
I got madder with each step as I climbed. [IMG] Wasnt there a tomato on that corner? [IMG] Where is the other pepper? [IMG] Why arent the beans up yet?

They were up. Something bit them all off!!!!

    Cutworms?? [IMG]
    Birds? Rodents?[IMG]

I rotenoned everything. Hope the birds were eating the cutworms. I know a rodent took a strawberry or 2, something was biting at my peas/ I've never had this much pest trouble at once before.... {{insert crying smiley here}} and now its raining!

    Wrennie;
So sorry to hear about your pest problems. Is it too late to replant in your area?

If you can replant...a good way to stop the cut worms is to either plant in a tire or use news paper...you dig a hole and layer news paper or cardboard around the outside of the hole to stick up a few inches out of the dirt. then put your plant inside...the worms are too lazy to climb over.

I hope you are able to replant.

Oh Wrennie... what a sad thing to happen. Sad and angering too! What will be your next move now? Have you got a plan?

I just can't get over it.
    Darn it!

Oh no! I'm having a bit of a problem with something ?? eating things too. 3 Tomato plants bitten off and many beans are now missing leaves. Something also dug up some potatoes the same night as I planted them. I also seem to have a flea beetle infestation on my radish and turnips.
I hope you are able to re-plant Wrennie. It sure can be frustrating, can't it?

Gardengater it's not too late to replant some things.
I did replant the beans yesterday. I'll just have a later crop than planned. The pepper its way too late for. I have to start them inside 8 - 12 weeks before my last frost of May 30. I had 2 tomatoes i over-sowed so those went in. I had no room for my okra starts before so they went where the cut off pepper was.

Gardenmama, thanks! I will be making newspaper collars today. I've been dusting for flea beetles. So I hope that will take care of any other bugs like cutworms, but ya' can't be too careful I guess.

Sjoerd, yesterday I fenced the tomato patch into the existing fenced in area, actually re-did the whole thing, so if the cute bunny is getting any ideas, that will stop him. I have to pick up 2 more fence posts while I am out today to fence the peppers beans and okra. Then I'll continue with the rotenone dust for the bugs. I have to watch closer when the birds go in there to see if they think the emerging cotyledons are grubs or if theyre picking at something else. If its them I'll have to get row cover or something like that until the plants dont look like lunch to them.

Netty flea beetles are a pain to get rid of. Try rotenone dust or a pyrethrin bug spray. radishes are commonly used as a crop to keep flea beetles off potatoes or beans. Good luck!

I truly feel your pain. I had one hornworm two days ago that I removed only to find six this morning and all my tomatos are almost extinct. I will be removing them today as they are all dead.
