Recently I found a birdfeeding tip in a magazine for feeding Woodpeckers. Suet block and holder, pull the top off the suet package but leave it in the container, place that in the suet block holder and hang it with the suet block down and the package bottom on top. Woodpeckers feed hanging onto the bottom of a feeder but other birds do not. I put one out last week and waited. I had heard one in the pecan tree by my window the day before but didn't see or hear him again the rest of last week. This morning I was filling birdfeeders for the other 'pigs' that come to visit them and found this female hanging from the feeder and digging into the suet block. That was sooooo cool. Randy was able to get a good photo thru the window. Hairy Woodpecker at suet feeder ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden )
Thanks for the tip that's a great idea. I saw the grackles trying to eat the suet this morning. I need to do that next time. I usually take it out of the packaging. Great photo.
I have been keeping an eye on the woodpecker suet feeder. Other birds have landed on it expecting to eat their fill but they find the plastic package instead and leave it alone. And since they aren't clinging birds that can't feed upside down, the woodpecker will have that treat all to herself.
That's a great tip, Toni. I like woodpeckers and I like seeing the ones that live over that way. You and your man make a great feeding and fotographing team.
Great tip but I must have some pretty smart birds here...I have the starlings, etc. feed hanging upside down.
Shhhhhh, don't let the Starlings and RedWing Blackbirds in my yard hear you say that, so far they haven't figured out that they can do it. It is amazing how birds, etc. adapt and change their behaviour, part of survival of the fittest I guess.
At first it works then you have one wise guy or wise bird do it and they all start doing it. Maybe yours won't catch on so fast...good luck.. Another thing...mine peck holes in the plastic if I leave it on the suet and then they have such a large hole from pecking, they eat the suet. :-o
