Hairy Woodpecker at suet feeder

Recently I found a birdfeeding tip in a magazine for feeding Woodpeckers.
Suet block and holder, pull the top off the suet package but leave it in the container, place that in the suet block holder and hang it with the suet block down and the package bottom on top. Woodpeckers feed hanging onto the bottom of a feeder but other birds do not.
I put one out last week and waited. I had heard one in the pecan tree by my window the day before but didn't see or hear him again the rest of last week. This morning I was filling birdfeeders for the other 'pigs' that come to visit them and found this female hanging from the feeder and digging into the suet block.
That was sooooo cool. Randy was able to get a good photo thru the window.

I have been keeping an eye on the woodpecker suet feeder. Other birds have landed on it expecting to eat their fill but they find the plastic package instead and leave it alone. And since they aren't clinging birds that can't feed upside down, the woodpecker will have that treat all to herself.

 

Shhhhhh, don't let the Starlings and RedWing Blackbirds in my yard hear you say that, so far they haven't figured out that they can do it.

It is amazing how birds, etc. adapt and change their behaviour, part of survival of the fittest I guess.
