There is a "harvest moon" that shines so brightly that farmers could harvest at night. We harvested apples this morning (no way am I staying up late to pick apples at night!) even if we had a harvest moon. Our Winesap tree did very well this year, but the Yellow Delicious didn't. Our pears finally ripened and the almonds did well. We'll spend an hour or two at the garden table shelling almonds. I'll have to ask Mart and anyone else with apples how we can boost the output of the Yellow Delicious. Any advice, anyone?
I have no idea MG,, I am trying to get my apples to cut back ! Did your trees have a large growth of leaves this year ?
Mart, we didn't have more leaves on the apple trees than usual. We did notice that the blossoms didn't occur all at the same time, but were spaced out over about two weeks. Want a good recipe for apple bread? It freezes well.
Netty, I'll post the apple bread recipe on the recipes forum later today. It is really quite good--at least I haven't received any complaints yet!
Might need pruning, if apples don't get pruned they can revert to biennial fruiting. The ones we pick from in the hedgerow hardly had any on this year but they were packed last year. Frost during the blossom time can also wreck the harvest, we didn't get any pears this year, had to buy some in
Jane, I think that Zigs may have a good point about pruning. I prune my trees twice a year, once in the winter and once the fruits have begun to form somewhat. It was in june this season...right before the june drop. This technique has served me well, but this year the harvest was about double of what it normally is. I had clusters of five and six apples per cluster and removed three apples per cluster.
Oh me too. I am an enormous fan...and even got to see him live once. The Bride and I were over the moon.
How wonderful! I suppose seeing Neil Diamond was a highlight for me. Then Tina Turner, such a dancer and singer, entertainer, and surprise, Alice Cooper. I KNOW! Who would think, but I enjoyed his show.
