I had one several years ago and he or she was one of the neatest birds I ever had. It's been fun to hear every ones stories. Several years ago I found an injured young crow. It had a broken wing. It looked like it had gotten run over by a car as it had shallow cuts on it back as well. So I took it to my vet who said that it would never heal right and he would never be able to fly. So I took him or her home and made a cage behind our house out of old screen windows. I feed it soggy dog food, fruit and veggies. I named him Inky and he knew his name. When I would come home from work I would call out his name from the front yard. He would start calling to me and as I came into view he would squat down on his perch, spread his wings out and wag his tail back and forth like a dog. I knew he was happy to see me. I would let him out of his cage and he stayed in the yard investigating everything. He would also play with our 2 house dogs when they were in the yard together. But in Oct. I figured I better find him a better home. So I called a wildlife sanctuary about 50 miles from us. They said that they would love to have him. Seeing he was so tame he would be a real asset to the place. So when I dropped him off I felt like I was leaving one of my kids there. They said that he would be just fine. They would put him in with other birds that got along with him. I would call and see how he was doing. He was there about 4wks when they decided to do some cage remodeling for the birds. I called one day to see how he was and they told me he had died. :'( They told me that someone had moved him out of his old cage which was going to be remodeled. And they put him in with a Vulture. Not knowing that they are mortal enemies. I felt so :'( for him and so guilty. Like I had done it to him. I know I didn't but you do feel responsible in someway because I brought him there.
A pair of crows made a nest in one of our pine trees. The pair would patrol our yard first before starting out foraging for the day. When food was put in the yard they never went to the food immediately. Sitting in the tree they would caw inviting their friends, with as many as a dozen crows in the trees they would look at the food daring each other to be the first to try the food till one went down then they all joined in. Pretty smart creatures and very entertaining. Jerry
I nursed one back to health once. I don't think my father was too interested though as they are enemy #1 for our potato crop!
