I was just wondering if there are any of you who have done a family history search? I have checked out my Mothers fathers side. We traced them back to the 1790's in France. Their last name was Hory, but was changed to Ory or Ora when they immigrated to the US around 1833.
It can be frustrating and sometimes confusing because of last name changes that happened when they went threw Ellis Island. But also very interesting. Would love to go too France and see if we could find any living relatives. How about you?

I have traced my fathers side back to county Anthem in Ireland. The first Kirkpatrick came over in 1750 at age 9. This was supposed to be due to the potato famine. There are 2 lines of thinking of which one is connected to our family. If it is the other line then the lineage goes all the way back to King Edward I. And I could be in line to the monarchy of England. I think I would about 4 millionth in line!

Speaking of searching for ancestors, just a little over a year ago there was another topic about it...
    Searching for ancestors

I like to have never found the topic, had to search through my Trash folder (which I have never emptied thank goodness).

I haven't done much in several months, got to get back to it.

Capt. it is interesting why our families moved where they did. Wow, royalty! Would you please put me in your will. :-D

Toni thanks for the link. I haven't done much in the past year in doing more research on my family tree either. Sometimes I can't see the forest for all the trees. :D

What I enjoyed most was researching my Great Grandfather. There were all kinds of stories about his time during the Civil War. He was in the Union Army and fought for all 4 years of the war and survived. I have a copy of his pesion card after he got out. He drew a whole $13 a month pension. I was able to trace all of the battles that his Co. was in.

My mom is working on a family history for me (her side of the fam, anyway). Its fun to see where your ancestors came from!

So far, we know my lineage includes African , British Isles, Native American and Northern European. Specific countries I havent really looked at though.

Heehee while looking just now, I found my 4x great grandfather was from Ayrshire, Scotland :D

My family even has a Coat of Arms :D

I think I wanna do a blog about my fam tree...

Oh yes! I've been working on my family tree for about 12 years now. I spent a good part of the winter reading through parish registers and have busted down a few brick walls because of it. Very addicting pass-time that is never really finished...

Capt. that is really interesting about your GG. I have never gone into the history of what the people did. But I will have to take a closer look. It's a miracle he survived being in the war 4 yrs. Especially back then when a gun shot wound was more likely to kill you because of lead poisoning and infection. You have really inspiried me to do some digging. Also our weather is inspiring me to do some digging.60-70"s today and this weekend. HaaHoo!

TheBip that is quite a family tree. A lot of grafting going on there. :-D I love Coats of arms. They are all so differnt and quite interesting. Looking forward to your blog.

Netty- you and Capt. are definitely more serious about searching out the details than I was. I actually got a copy of my mom's dad's side of our tree from a cuz who did a lot of research. But no details as to their lives. Now I will have to get out that shovel and do some digging. ;)

We have a lot of stories passed down thru the family so that provided a lot of information then my brother and a cousin started researching. My family came from Ireland and Scotland, one great, great, (not sure how many greats without looking) uncle was hanged off the coast of NC as a pirate. We have a great, great (again not sure how many greats) grandmother who was a Cherokee. Our family has had someone fight in every war including the Revolutionary War with the exception of the Spanish war (not sure about that one) and the Korean war. We have had moonshiners, pugalist, a pirate, indentured servants, and a Great Uncle who was scheduled to fight Joe Lewis until he had his physical; they found a problem with his heart and wouldn't let him fight. Of course this was before Joe became champion. One of my grandfathers on my Daddy's side used to change uniforms and cross over to the yankee lines to steal food when things really got tough for the South. A grandfather on my mother's side was wounded during the Civil war. We found military records regarding the wound. I am writing a book of all the family stories with pictures of all I can find for my grandsons and the grands of my siblings. My mother has a couple of photos that are the old tintype (SP?) My Daddy is the last of his eight siblings. He and my mother are 85 and she is the oldest of her siblings. I lost a great Uncle, my Grandmother's brother, who had some really good (if there is such a thing) war stories not too long ago and I am trying to get all the stories recorded so the younger generation will know about their ancestors when there's no one left to tell the tales. I am recording up to the present day and hopefully, someone will continue when I am gone.

White_Wolfe you sound like you have had quite the unique ancestry. I have never researched the people in my family tree as to what they where, or did. I will have to see what I can find. A pirate! How interesting. Are you going to publish the book? Sound like it would be a great read. Keep us informed. :stew2:

No tooty2shoes, unfortunately, unlike my brother and cousin I wasn't blessed with the gift of being a writer; besides, I can't see anyone being interested in my family history except my family. I am just trying to put together a history of the family so the next generations will have the information that has been passed down and the research which has been done. Like I said, I hope the youngsters will keep it updated with family happenings that would interest future generations and give them an idea of what their ancestors were like. There has been more than one instance when I've thought "I sure wish some of our ancestors had kept a journal". I would like to know things about their daily lives, their personalities, etc. Maybe with my stories, the future generations in our family will get an idea of who we really were.

Yes that would have been really interesting if they had kept journals. I think back then maybe they where to busy just keeping alive.
A lot of people would be interested in reading your family history. Stuff like that is very popular. Who know where it would lead. With God all things are possible. ;)
