I planted bulbs one fall, and when I saw nothing growing in their place in the spring, I began to dig around. I never did find the bulbs and instead began to wonder if I had ever actually planted them. Does anyone else have any stories about disappearing bulbs?
I have lots and lots of squirrels, they've never eaten any of my Lily bulbs. Now Tulips . . . . . . that's another story!
Definately squirrels are the culprits here too. I found an ideal solution to keep them off my pots of bulbs. What a pity I can't do the same with the whole garden.
It may have been gophers if so you may have bulbs show up and bloom inthe weirdest places as they want eat them they just move them all over the place .You may have a neighbor that gets them or on the other side of the fences.
Courtney I have crocus's in that pot which the squirrels seem to love digging up and eating. Foiled them this time though didn't I?
Well I can say that squirrels have never stole any of my bulbs but on the other hand...A couple of weeks ago I planted some bulbs glendann gave me and I will be darned two hours later I went outside and my daughters pit bull Deogie decided he did not want them there.He never has bothered that bed before and that just ticked me off that he did that!!!
I have had my minor bulbs eaten by animals. I have begun adding a little sharp gravel (not pebbles) to the backfilled soil. I haven't had a problem since. I also stopped using bone meal and a lot of the natural type fertilizers. I think the smell attracts some of the animals.
do squirrels still eat your stuff if you have food for them to eat? I dont have any crocus Eileen. will they grow in my area?
I have come to the conclusion that the bulbs are attractive to several of our little critters, including the pair of mini dachshunds. I don't feed the squirrels but that doesn't seem to stop the coming around.
HI, your in Louisiana? me too, I planted tulips several times and never saw a one. Not cold enough is number one reason, number two to wet. I had the tulips planted in a raised bed on a slope, planted good quality blubs too. Now when I want them I buy a bunch as cut flowers.
Courtney I don't know if crocus's will grow for you or not as I come from Scotland. However, I can say that even if there is plenty of food around the squirrels here will still dig up bulbs. Sometimes they carry them to different parts of the garden and re-bury them (as a food store.) I've had them growing in the garden the next year as the squirrels seem to forget where they buried them. Makes life interesting if nothing else.
